Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a remarkable and versatile treatment with many uses in various fields of medicine. At MAXiM, our affiliated doctors use it to treat hair loss, relieve pain from joint and soft tissue injuries, and rejuvenate facial skin tone and texture. In all cases, it is a relatively simple and quick procedure with very few side effects since it uses a sample of your own blood.
PRP Therapy Hair Restoration
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an in-office clinical procedure that involves separating blood platelets from your own blood and injecting them into your scalp. Blood platelets contain growth factors that attract stem cells to the thinning and balding areas.
The PRP procedure entails taking approximately 60 ml of blood and concentrating the platelets to be re-injected into the scalp. This stimulates the hair growth phase for the next few months. Following the procedure, there may be some tingling and swelling, which eventually subsides.
Generally, people see enhanced hair growth and thickness within 3 to 6 months. There are no reactions, side effects, or allergies since PRP uses the patient’s own blood.
PRP works great when the hair follicles are still present. It restores the hair follicles to their original size and minimizes hair thinning. Therefore, platelet-rich plasma works best in women as well as younger men who are just beginning to lose their hair. It is not a good solution for those with more advanced stages of thinning or baldness.
Not everyone is a good candidate for PRP therapy. Those suffering from alopecia areata respond well to PRP treatment, whereas others suffering from hair loss due to medical conditions such as cancer do not respond to PRP.
During your consultation, your MAXiM plastic surgeon will advise you if PRP is the right treatment for you and recommend other alternatives if you are not a candidate for PRP therapy.
PRP Therapy for Joint and Soft Tissue Pain
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy may be used to relieve pain for common degenerative orthopedic conditions such as arthritis of the knee, shoulder, hip, and spine. Arthritis occurs when the cartilage that lines joints wears away, causing pain when the bones rub together. PRP therapy can stimulate the growth of cartilage in the joint, which helps reduce pain and restore mobility.
PRP therapy is also used to help heal many soft tissue injuries, including partial ligament and tendon tears, chronic plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. If you have a painful joint condition or soft tissue injury, find out if you might be a candidate for PRP therapy.
For some people, PRP therapy can eliminate the need for surgery or be used as a treatment for those who are not candidates for surgery.
After drawing and processing a sample of your own blood, the platelet-rich concentration is injected directly into the injured area of the body. The growth factors then jump start the body’s natural healing process and regeneration of healthy tissue.
Up to three injections may be given within a six-month time frame, usually performed two to three weeks apart. While you may experience significant relief after the first or second injection, healing takes time, and the pain will gradually subside over several weeks as the healing progresses.
PRP Therapy for Facial Rejuvenation
People are increasingly turning to PRP therapy to help rejuvenate their skin. Our MAXiM-affiliated physicians use PRP in conjunction with microneedling (collagen induction therapy) to treat the face and body. Microneedling creates micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate new collagen and elastin, and adding PRP to these micro-injuries accelerates the production of collagen, which causes new, healthy skin cells to grow and replace dead skin cells.
The results are impressive: wrinkles and fine lines are smoothed out, skin tone and texture is improved, and the appearance of pores, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and stretch marks is minimized.
Plus, there is minimal downtime, and the results are almost universally suited to every patient’s skin needs. Whether you’re seeking a high-reward “maintenance” treatment or looking for a quick fix before an event when you want your complexion to look its best, PRP therapy with microneedling is an excellent option.
